A statement wall is a striking design element

(NC) Creating a statement wall is a wonderful way to catch attention without committing the entire room to one colour. Indeed, with a statement wall, homeowners can opt for a far more dramatic pop than they would dare to use elsewhere. Here, Sharon Grech, the colour and design expert at Benjamin Moore, shares her tips on how to elevate a statement wall into making an even bolder impact by using the trendiest paint and accessories.

Carefully choose which wall to highlight: There is a process when deciding which wall receives special treatment. Is there something unique architecturally about the wall that merits a small dose of colour? Is there a piece of artwork that will shine when given the perfect backdrop? Trust your instincts when choosing this striking design element in your home, or ask a friend or family member if you need a second opinion.

Create a subtle contrast

If you prefer a gentle contrast to bold wall paint, try using a deeper version of your existing wall colour on one wall. “This slight variance in shade creates interest and breaks up the solitary colour, while still placing the spotlight on one area,” Grech points out. Another option designers are experimenting with involves using various paint finishes on the statement wall. In the room photographed, Grech says Caribbean Teal painted with the Advance high gloss formula, was applied to really make a colourful impact. Since paint colour changes throughout the day depending on how the light is reflected, big open windows that stream in light really make the statement wall the focal point of the room.

Picture galleries add a touch of personalization: Gallery walls are having a major design moment, and with good reason. This purposeful grouping of picture frames of various shapes and sizes allows the homeowner to collect and artfully showcase their favourite prints that may not have had a home previously. It allows the individual's personality to shine through while maintaining a design savvy look and feel.

Chalk it up to colour: Nothing is more unique and playful than a statement wall painted with chalkboard paint. “With our company's Tintable Chalkboard Paint, homeowners no longer have to sacrifice colour when scribbling notes, to-do lists, or grocery reminders on their walls,” says Grech. This paint is available in any colour and dries to a beautiful eggshell finish. It's versatile, which means you can add chalk when desired for a playful feel, or simply wipe it clean for a sophisticated look that lets the colour become the focal point.
