Heart Disease claims a death every seven minutes
(NC)—Every seven minutes in Canada, someone dies from heart disease or stroke. That's nine people an hour, or 216 people a day. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death across the country, and affects thousands each year.
Like many illnesses, the more risk factors you have for heart disease, the higher your chances are for developing it. Some risk factors that are in our control (the ones we can manage) include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, being overweight and being smoke-free. Nine in 10 Canadians have at least one risk factor for heart disease or stroke.
But some are not in our control, such as family history. For Muhammed Ali, from Ontario, who recently suffered a heart attack, both of his parents underwent bypass surgeries, so he always knew he was at risk for heart disease.
Since he suffered the attack, Ali made some changes to his lifestyle to manage those risk factors, including eating better and exercising regularly. He has also been working with his doctor to manage his cholesterol levels with 'statin therapy' and makes sure he is taking the right preventative measures.
If you have a history of heart disease in your family or if you are currently being treated for one or more risk factors, your doctor can help you better identify where else you may be at risk and can work with you to optimally manage and reduce these factors.
