You can avoid a Heart Disease Diagnosis

(NC)—Every seven minutes in Canada, someone dies from heart disease or stroke. With 90 per cent of us currently living with at least one contributing factor of heart disease – high blood pressure, diabetes and more – the risk of this life threatening condition is too great to ignore.

Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in Canada and affects thousands each year. With proper lifestyle and diet changes however, heart disease is preventable and manageable.

“Reducing your risk of heart disease is in your control,” says Scarborough's, Dr. Basel Bari. “With proper diet and regular exercise, you can significantly lower your chances of experiencing heart problems.”

One of the most common risk factors associated with heart disease, is high cholesterol, which affects almost half of all Canadians. It can be managed through simple lifestyle changes, like limiting alcohol intake and staying smoke-free, or with medication such as statin therapy, cholesterol absorption inhibitors, bile acid sequestrants, fibric acids (fibrates) and niacin. Statins are often a first-line medication to help lower cholesterol.

If you have a history of heart disease in your family or if you are currently being treated for one or more risk factors, your doctor can help you better identify where else you may be at risk and can work with you to optimally manage and reduce these factors.
