Beat this year's flu virus by visiting your local pharmacy to get your shot
By Dr. Arlene King, Chief Medical Officer of Health for Ontario
(NC) Shampoo, toothpaste, pain reliever … and a flu shot. These are all things Ontarians can get with a quick stop at their local pharmacy.
For a second year, Ontario pharmacists will be offering free flu shots to those five years and older as part of the Ontario government's Universal Influenza Immunization Program (UIIP). Having pharmacists administer the flu shot makes it even more convenient for people to protect themselves and others around them from the flu.
Last year, over 600 pharmacies delivered free flu shots across the province. This year, Ontarians can expect trained pharmacists at close to 2,000 pharmacies to administer the vaccine.
Ontario offers the flu vaccine free of charge to anyone six months of age or older who lives, works or attends school in the province. In addition to pharmacies, the flu shot is available through doctors' offices, public health units, participating workplace flu clinics, and other community clinics.
To make it easy for Ontarians to find flu clinic locations, Ontario has a Flu Shot Locator tool online. This and more information related to the benefits of immunization against the flu can be found at: www.ontario.ca/flu.
