Don't risk buying 'bad wheels' just to save money
(NC) New research commissioned by OMVIC (Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council), Ontario's motor vehicle sales regulator, implies many Ontario car buyers are willing to sacrifice consumer protection to save money.
The survey of 800 Ontario used car buyers found that almost half (43 per cent) said that knowing they have access to consumer protection only through an Ontario-registered dealer would not influence where they buy their next car.
The survey also revealed that:
• 59 per cent said their biggest fear when buying a car is getting a “lemon”;
• 73 per cent didn't know that Ontario vehicle salespeople must be certified in automotive law and ethics and registered with OMVIC;
• 40 per cent said that it's either extremely important, or important, to buy from a registered and certified salesperson; another 32 per cent said it's somewhat important; and
• 34 per cent didn't know that a curbsider is an unlicensed dealer (who usually poses as a private seller).
“The data reveals contradictions in car buyers' priorities, fears and behaviours,” explains Terry O'Keefe, Manager of Communications for OMVIC. “They're afraid of buying bad wheels and say it's important to deal with a registered dealer. But many would surrender the consumer protections available through a registered dealer, most likely to save money.”
OMVIC is also concerned that many car buyers are vulnerable to curbsiders, who routinely flog off accident-damaged, misrepresented or odometer-tampered vehicles. “These guys are very good at what they do and deception is the name of the game,” says O'Keefe. “If there are problems after the sale, you'll probably never find them again.”
“Ask yourself,” he adds, “Is it worth saving a few dollars if you end up with a car whose odometer has been rolled back, or if you discover undisclosed damage? You take a risk buying privately, but if you decide to go this route, get informed.”
