Tips for cashing a Government of Canada cheque
(NC) Even if you are not a customer, you can cash a cheque from the federal government at any bank for free, as long as the amount is $1,500 or less, and you can show acceptable identification. This service includes Canada Pension Plan and Employment Insurance payments.
Another convenient option is to use direct deposit. It is free and secure—you won't have to worry about losing cheques. Starting April 2016, the Government of Canada will deposit all payments electronically, directly into your bank account.
